Snape Stock III
FanGirl Alert!

Yet another digitally manipulated "stock" photo (from an artist on DeviantArt who has kindly posted gobs of stock photos for use with credit) of our favorite Potions Master. Personally I think this one is the best-rendered one I've done yet. This is image #3, of which series there may end up being 5 in total. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to bother with the last 2, but who knows. It's a nice cheap escape from making jewlery so it depends on the next time I need a break. :P

"Severus"

If the image seems a bit "rough", it's because of a brush texture I used which is really only beneficial to the viewer if the picture is printed out quite large or viewed at its original size (2400x3096). For comparison, the image shown here is only about 750x1000. The original stock photo was so grainy and overexposed (as were all of them) that using some sort of Photoshop filter to mask it was unavoidable.

So... what did I manipulate? In all the Snape Stock pics I had to change the nose (lengthen and narrow), narrow the entire face slightly, clean up the skin texture, desaturate just about everything, increase the contrast, darken the background, shorten the hair at the shoulder and lengthen the greasy strands next to the face, clean up the centre part in the hair, enhance the starkness of the eyes, and in this case also add the appearance of a white shirt peeking out from the cuffs of his coat. It was a lot of work, actually.

Many gracious thanks to Cobweb-stock for this brilliant stock image of himself (originally photographed by Lockstock).

Prints for sale on DeviantArt here, as well as on Zazzle (along with a crapload of other amusing Snape-themed stuff) here.

It's a learning thing
Thanks! I've always painted images of women (I guess because I am one, so it's easier) and rarely, VERY rarely images of men. I've never been terribly happy with how they've turned out; they always end up looking awkward (to me, anyway). So in a way this is helping me learn more about how mens' and womens' faces and hands differ. Even in 4 years of art school I can only recall 2 male nude models ever - so I've had very little practice. This is a good exercize for me, I think. And no, I'm not getting my jollies by doing this at all, nope, nuh-uh. :P

B-day was awesome (especially considering how cruddy I've been feeling lately). And uh - hee hee! - Michael bought me a copy of Order of the Phoenix. Now *that's* love, man!

Re: It's a learning thing
I've always had a harder time with guys than the ladies as well, and oddly enough, really feminine women; if the models were muscular or chubby, I had an easier time drawing them then if they were thin little things. I was lucky enough that one of our most regular models in my college life drawing class was a guy. He was young, nicely sculpted and German, and had no problems being buck ass nekkid in front of a class of mostly 20-something girls. His English wasn't 100%, but he would tell us these crazy stories about when he escaped communist Germany by going over the Alps.

Having a regular male model helped immensely, but I still have a tougher time with the lads. Especially the male hip region for some reason. Every time I've had to draw that area in the comic on one of the guys, it's always tough for me. Tell me again why 75% of my characters are male again. d-:

Yay for your awesome b-day, and double plus yay for loves willing to feed our fangirlishness. Heh, heh.
