Valerian
I would like to introduce the work of a specific artist/designer to you today. Came across her creations when she added me as a friend on Tribe (feel free to add me BTW, I don't bite) back in June.

Now don't get me wrong - I may be a bit quiet and reserved but I am NOT a snotty egotistical person with an axe to grind. But sometimes, some things I see can really upset me when I've worked very hard to be as original as I possibly can (within the confines of our genre, that is).

Cigar Box Purse - A black felt interior even. But wait a second...doesn't that remind you of anything? Like, this maybe? Or perhaps this will jog your memory? Nice red fabric background, eh?

Peacock Hat - Do you think you might have seen it before? Or maybe just its name?

Lace Choker - Does this vaguely remind you of anything? Even if only remotely?

Lace Hat - That's pretty nice. But is it somewhat familiar? No? Maybe try the back view.

Purple Hat - Although just in case you're having your doubts, this one might spark your memory.

Coverlet - Wait a second, doesn't Kambriel make these...?

I understand that this corset belt may be reminiscent of a fellow LJer's work, but I haven't seen a photo to compare them yet to say for sure. But I trust the source who pointed it out.

Yes, I realize that I may be coming off as unnecessarily bitter (some of you may recall I made a short post about this back in June - I'm posting again because since then more similarities have been discovered). Because after all, in the world of fashion there are big-name famous designers and there are companies who make cheap knock-offs of their designs to sell to department stores, and it has been happening for almost 100 years. But we're not dealing with big famous designers here, nor department stores. We're dealing with independant artists who are constantly struggling to make a name for themselves, and very much rely on the support of their niche community to do it. So, with that in mind, I would like to include a quote here (author unknown), which is why this post is a PUBLIC entry:
"Inspiration can be derived from those who have come before us, however an artist should never copy the work of another for it is against the very spirit of what feeds our creativity."

Amen.
